Versus: The Ultimate Party Game is operated by Archetypes, Inc., a nonprofit organization. Our mission is to help people find and build genuine human connections in the real world.
We take privacy seriously. Versus is built around anonymity and pseudonymity by design. We will never sell your data. We will never use it for advertising. We collect only what is necessary to make the app work.
| Data | Why | How Long |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Account authentication and recovery only. Never shown to other users. Never shared. | Until you leave The Connected |
| Pseudonym | Your in-app identity. No real names. Visible to other users only after mutual consent. | Until you leave The Connected |
| Faction (Pirate or Ninja) | Your cosmetic identity on the map. Visible to nearby users. | Until you leave The Connected |
| Location (approximate) | Proximity detection only. Stored as a single overwritten point. Never historical. Auto-expires. Never raw GPS coordinates — only a reverse-geocoded place name, stored encrypted. | Ephemeral — auto-expires |
| About Me fields | Interests, hobbies, skills, activities. Shared only with users you have mutually consented to connect with. | Until you update or leave |
| Encounter records | A record of BLE-confirmed face-to-face engagements. Used to calculate Social Capital and display History. Location stored encrypted as a place name only. | Until you leave The Connected |
| Social Capital | A measure of real-world engagement. Operator-facing metric only. Never a public leaderboard. | Until you leave The Connected |
We do not collect your real name, phone number, contacts, photos, browsing history, purchase history, health data, or any other personal information not listed above.
Location is the most sensitive data Versus handles. Here is exactly how we treat it:
What we store: A single approximate location point, overwritten each time your device broadcasts. We never store a history of where you have been. We store only a reverse-geocoded place name (e.g., "Union Square, San Francisco") — never raw GPS coordinates.
Encryption: Place names are encrypted using AES-GCM with a Curve25519 keypair. Your private key lives in your iCloud Keychain. We cannot read your stored location.
Expiry: Your location point auto-expires after a short window of inactivity. If you stop using the app, your location disappears from our system automatically.
Who sees it: Your approximate location is used server-side to determine which other users are nearby. It is never displayed to other users as a coordinate or address. Other users see only your faction emoji and pseudonym on a map.
We use your data for one purpose: to help you find and connect with other members of The Connected who are nearby.
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not build behavioral profiles. We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties except as required to operate the app (our backend infrastructure provider, Supabase, processes data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements).
Aggregate, anonymized metrics (total encounter counts, growth trends) are used by our team to understand whether The Connected is working as intended. These metrics cannot be traced back to individual users.
Versus uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to confirm that two users are physically present in the same location. BLE is used only when you explicitly tap Engage in the app. It is never used in the background. No Bluetooth data is transmitted to our servers — BLE is used only for local device-to-device confirmation.
You can leave The Connected at any time from the About Me tab. This deletes your account and all associated data from our systems.
You can update your About Me fields, pseudonym (once, at 90 days), and party information at any time.
You can request a copy of your data or ask questions about how it is used by contacting us at the address below.
Versus is not intended for users under the age of 17. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us immediately.
We will update this policy as Versus evolves. The version number and effective date at the top of this page will always reflect the current version. Material changes will be communicated to users through the app.
Previous versions of this policy are archived in our source code repository.
